About West Fenwick Island

Is there really a “West Fenwick” place?

There really is no “West Fenwick” except as a term many of us use to define our neighborhood (or set of neighborhoods) just to the west of Fenwick Island, Delaware. As far as we know, there is no official geographical designation or legal jurisdiction of West Fenwick; it is more a descriptive term of endearment than an official “place.” But we still love living here and this small website will share some of why we think this is a wonderful place – West Fenwick or not. 🙂

Come on Pretty Mama…

…enjoy the many beautiful crepe myrtle bushes/trees that are see along all the streets and roads during August and September – turning the entire area into a “Secret Garden” of your own.

Mancini’s Italian Restaurant and Brick Oven Pizzeria in Fenwick Island

Fine dining in Fenwick Island? You betcha!

The last time we visited Mancini’s we had a party of six – and can call it a “party” because we were celebrating two birthdays (all week). One of the birthday girls sent us the following email describing our dinner and why she likes dining at Mancini’s while visiting at the beach.

“Mancini’s Italian Restaurant and Brick Oven Pizzeria on Fenwick Island is that rare combination of old world charm, attentive service, and excellent cuisine, which makes it a true gem in this mid-Atlantic resort area. Our party sampled a variety of its offerings, and all were excellent. We began our journey with a number of appetizers, to include the roasted garlic bulb; bruschetta covered with either marinated tomatoes and flaked crabmeat, sun-dried tomato pesto and roasted pepper, or marinated tomatoes with mozzarella; and heirloom tomatoes topped with mozzarella. All were wonderful.

Then we each selected a different entree: brick oven pizza; Linguini Con Scampi; Capellini Ai Frutti Di Mare; Capellini Con Pollo and Carciofi; and (Wayne’s pasta, not sure what it was*). Each was excellent. Salad and fresh baked bread were included with the meals, and the house wines were quite good. A wonderful meal in a delightful location.”

This writer agrees with the birthday girl’s observations and has always enjoyed dining at Mancini’s. We love the Italian Restaurant part of the name and really enjoy the Brick Oven Pizza part – and we seem to enjoy them in that order, hence we take liberty with their name. The actual name, as it appears on their website and on their sign, is Mancini’s Brick Oven Pizzeria & Restaurant.

Mancini’s Brick Oven Pizzeria and Restaurant is an upscale place to dine in Fenwick Island at 907 Coastal Highway (302-537-4224). That’s on the ocean side of the highway about nine blocks north of the MD-DE line.
*Wayne’s pasta dish was the Bolognese.

The Overlook Homes & Community

A West Fenwick Boutique Resort Community

This new community, The Overlook, is just west of Fenwick Island on the north side of Route 54. It is located in Sussex County, Delaware and is in the Indian River School District. With NV Homes doing the building and sales, this development has become quite popular with its bayside/waterfront amenities and beautiful houses. Is is now “old enough,” however, that occasional resales are taking place.

However, Sadly…

Sadly, the “ghost” of this fox looks down on where his home used to be – before the bulldozers decimated his home while clearing land for The Overlook. Yes, this exact fox – was photographed just about where that first house is located – while this photographer stood where “The Overlook” sign is located. (A 300mm telephoto lens was used to capture the photo.)
This fox was part of a large community of foxes with many burrows, or dens, throughout this (what used to be) farmland. The underground dens provided cooling in the summer and a warm place in winter and were a good place for the vixens (female fox) to raise their young, like the little dude in the photo above. Sadly, the bulldozers made quick work of crushing the dens and exterminating the fox families.

There are great choices for dining right along Route 54 and, of course, in Fenwick Island.
